Another MI Gas Price Record

Gas prices in Michigan have set another new record.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is almost $4.26.

That’s a four-cent increase from yesterday.

AAA Michigan reports the previous record was $4.21, from July 17th, 2008.

The lowest gas prices in the state are in the Detroit area at just over $4.23 a gallon.

The highest prices are in the Saginaw/Bay City/Midland area — just under $4.29.

The national average is $3.98.

AAA Michigan surveys 2,800 gas stations in the state every day.

But an important thing to note about AAA — they conduct the survey in the very early hours of the morning.

Prices can change later in the day.

Latetly, those changes have been increases rather than price cuts.

Many stations in the central U.P. were selling fuel at $4.29 this afternoon.

Ruth Almen of Marquette Township says the price hike leaves her with no choice but to curtail other types of spending, like recreation.

And the worst may not be over.

For months now, some economists and fuel industry analysts have said we may have $6 gas sometime this summer.

That prospect has ruth worried.

She says to her, the price shifts don’t seem to be based on logic or common-sense reasoning.

When the state average reached $4.21 a gallon in the summer of 2008, the Marquette area topped out at $4.25.

But then the price plummeted back below the $2 mark by Thanksgiving.
