REAL ID-compliant documents needed for domestic travel in October 2020
MARQUETTE COUNTY —Beginning October 1st, 2020, Michigan residents will need some new documentation when traveling. Residents will need to present a REAL ID-compliant document to fly within the United States and enter certain federal facilities under federal law.
The REAL ID law sets document and security protocols for the production of driver’s licenses and ID cards, including the use of features to prevent illegal copying or altering. This allows for tighter security and preventative measures to increase safety at airports and federal facilities. Other compliant documents that can be used include valid U.S. passports and trusted traveler cards issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“If you do not have a REAL ID or an enhanced driver’s license by October 1st, 2020, you will not be allowed on domestic flights,” explained Duane Duray, Airport Manager at Sawyer International Airport. “You will need to either have your current driver’s license renewed with a REAL ID or have an enhanced driver’s license or a passport. It is not a hard process to get a new ID and all you have to do is go to the Secretary of State and apply for it.”
