Downtown Marquette Farmers Market begins another season

MARQUETTE — The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market opened for the 2018 season over the weekend. From now until December 19th, patrons can purchase goods from over 60 vendors at the Marquette Commons every Saturday between 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Each vendor comes from less than 100 miles away, so the products are generally fresher than those bought from the store. Because the farmers do not have to grow for storage or transportation, this allows for them to have more variety among their products.

Market Manager Myra Zyburt says that variety of products, and the interaction that customers can have directly with the producers, are the two reasons why farmers markets are so successful.

“In every other shopping experience, you’re completely removed from the person growing the product,” said Zyburt. “If you have questions about growing practices, varieties, how to use it, why the farmer chose that, that all is available here.”

The Downtown Marquette Farmer’s market also accepts five different forms of food assistance including the Bridge Card, Project Fresh, Senior Market Fresh and Hoophouses for Health.
