One arrested, one at large after alleged car theft results in crash
IRON MOUNTAIN — One person is in jail and another remains at large after an accident led to the discovery of two stolen vehicles.
Iron Mountain Police were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of West Hughitt Street and Harding Avenue shortly before 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Police learned that the pickup truck — which had struck a power pole — was stolen from the Northside area of Iron Mountain. Two occupants fled the scene into the wooded area of City Park.
One of the suspects — a 17-year-old male form Iron Mountain — was arrested and lodged at the Dickinson County Correctional Center pending arraignment on formal charges. Police say the second individual is still at large but has been identified. Criminal charges for that second suspect are anticipated after review of the criminal complaint by the County Prosecutor.
The truck that hit a power pole was the second of two vehicles stolen from the Northside area. The first pickup truck was also in a minor traffic crash, after which it was used to cause damage to the grass near the Northside Baseball Field. This truck became disabled and was abandoned prior to the theft of the second truck.
The investigation into this incident remains open, and police ask that anyone with information call the Iron Mountain Police Department at (906) 774-1234.
The Iron Mountain Police Department was assisted at the scene by officers from the Kingsford Public Safety Department, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, and an evidence technician from the Michigan State Police.
