Camp teaching teens coding
MARQUETTE — Some high school kids are getting a leg up in computer science this week at Northern Michigan University.
Today is the beginning of the fourth annual Cyber Camp. This summer program teaches teens skills like programming and robotics. Students even get a chance to develop an IPhone app. Organizers say these abilities are in high demand in today’s job market.
Chris Standerford, the director of NMU’s Seaborg Mathematics and Science center said, “I hope the students will gain just an appreciation about what codes all about, what you can do with it, how varied an diversified the field is.”
In addition to developing computer science skills, students interact with N–M–U professors to see if a future in the field is right for them. Standerford said he’s “also hoping that students will make those connections with some of our computer science professors…that might be able to help them in the future.”
Cyber Camp runs through this Friday and has classes every afternoon until four. Even though the camp has already started, you can still register tomorrow.
The number for the Seaborg Mathematics and Science Center is (906) 227-2002
