In our on-going discovery of the deadly days of October throughout three centuries of travel on the Great Lakes, we note on this day in 1887 the schooner George Sherman was driven ashore by a gale between Marquette and Munising. It went down in thirty feet of water, but not before the crew struggled their way to shore where they hitched a ride on a passing ore train into Marquette to report the wreck.
16 years later, on this day in 1903 the schooner barge Savelend seperated from her consort the Gettysburg just off shore near Grand Maris harbor loaded with over 800,000 feet of pine lumber. The Saveland was driven into a dyke puncturing her haul. She quickly sank to the deck and was pounded to pieces by the waves.
