Huskies edge Wildcats in women’s soccer
HOUGHTON, Mich. – A pair of first half goals by Jacqueline Mielke propelled the Michigan Tech soccer team to a 2-1 win over Northern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 21) at Sherman Field. It was the Huskies third win in a row as they improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC.
“We came out with great intensity today,” Tech coach Michelle Jacob said. “We got some balls for our forwards to run on to and put a lot of pressure on them right away to get them back on their heals.”
Mielke tipped in a free kick from Megan Armstrong 15:45 into the game to give Tech the early lead. It was her second goal of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later (25:03), Mielke struck again as she caught a pass from Lexi Herrewig and buried it into the back of the net. It was Herrewig’s fourth assist of the year.
“Today was a good team effort,” Mielke said. “My teammates kept seeing me and getting me the ball in the right position.”
Northern (1-3-1, 0-1 GLIAC) came alive in the second half, after not recording a shot in the first. In the 46th minute, Paula Hafner had a shot that was saved by defender Emily Morin. Carmen Villaruel also had a shot that was saved by a Husky defender. This time it was Taylor Archibald who was in the right place at the right time.
Hafner brought the Wildcats to within one with a free kick 84:52 into the game.
“They played a lot better in the second half,” added Jacob. “They put pressure on us and we lost some momentum.”
Goakeeper Jenna Phelps won her second game of the season, playing all 90 minutes. Caroline Glantz had five saves for NMU.
Tech plays its first conference road game next week at Ashland.
“Last time at Ashland we didn’t win, so we have that in our minds,” added Mielke. “We’re going to have to be ready to play after a long bus ride.”
