Teaching Science
Two area middle school teachers are taking their summer experience working with scientists to the classroom.
Chuck Delpier is a science teacher at Negaunee Middle School.
Kristy Gollakner does the same at Gwinn Middle School.
Over the summer, the National Science Foundation paid for them to go to Colorado to learn new teaching techniques.
And today, they were sharing what they learned with other teachers.
During their time in Colorado, they learned a range of hands-on classroom activities.
In one of them, they blow up a balloon and measure it at different points to demonstrate how GPS technology can be used to measure when a volcano will erupt.
They’ll use the experiments in their classes this winter.
Delpier and Gollakner have also submitted their ideas to scientists to be reviewed, and they’re encouraging other teachers to try them out.
