Bill to OK Guns on Campus
Some state lawmakers are wanting guns want to allow CCW permit holders ability to carry a weapon on college campuses. Michigan state senator Randy Richardville of Monroe is pushing a bill to remove college campuses from the list of places where Michigan law does not allow permit holders to carry guns. Richardville believes the bill would help make college campuses safer, but some Northern Michigan University students disagree with the idea, believing that the open access would create more of a threat for the campus.
The bill wouldn’t allow everyone to carry a weapon on campus. students, faculty and staff would need permits and undergo proper training and background checks to carry a weapon. And based on those requirements, some students believe the bill would be helpful for the public safety officers by reducing the weight on their shoulders. The bill has been referred to the sente judiciary committee for further consideration.
