‘W’ Supporters Trying to Re-Open
Fundraising efforts continue as Marquette County residents hope to re-open the ‘W’.
The South County Community and Fitness Center closed in mid-May.
Neither West Branch Township nor the K.I. Sawyer Community Association could find enough money to cover the ‘W’s operating costs.
But a local nonprofit group has been working on that.
Community Hand-Up has helped raise about $20,000 since the closure.
Their goal is $100,000, which they say would keep the ‘W’ open for several months.
The group applied for a MSHDA state grant in May but got rejected late in the process.
Lisa Johnson of Community Hand-Up says the group has been busy this summer, trying to keep residents updated on their status while trying to raise more money.
There’s a spaghetti fundraiser later this month at the Gwinn VFW.
