More funds for families impacted by propane shortage

BENISHEK

From Congressman Dr. Dan Benishek’s Office:

Dr. Dan Benishek  praised the release of $22.1 million in additional heating assistance for low-income families in Northern Michigan who are being impacted by the recent propane shortage on Friday.

On January 24, Benishek urged President Barack Obama to provide these additional resources.

“This additional help is welcomed news for many families in Northern Michigan
who are struggling with sky high heat bills and a shortage of propane.  The bitterly cold winter we’ve been having has made the problems even worse.  It’s encouraging that the Administration is working with us to try to address this situation.  While this won’t completely fix the problem, these added resources should offer some help, especially to the neediest families in our communities,” Dr. Benishek said.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it is making available $454 million nationally, including $22.1 in Michigan, to support the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).  The LIHEAP program offers home energy assistance programs for low-income households.  Over 600,000 households are served in Michigan by this program.  Dr. Benishek has written to President Obama in support of LIHEAP funding each year since coming to Congress.

“My goal is to be as helpful as possible for families being impacted by this
propane shortage.  I encourage anyone who needs help to please contact my
office at 877-376-5613 or visit my website for some additional resources.  We
are here to assist you,” Dr. Benishek said.
