Special Olympics Winter Games kicks off Friday
The snow falling around Marquette Friday made a perfect afternoon for skiing at Marquette Mountain.
The 26th Annual Special Olympic Winter Games kicked off with a downhill skiing and snowboarding competition. Karl Crosby, a snowboard instructor, said the new snow made athletes take the runs slower. Slower runs meant that no one fell down, or was injured.
Awards were also given out to each Special Olympic athlete.
Crosby added there were spectators cheering on the athletes during their runs, something has not happen in years past.
Following dinner at Marquette Mountain, the athletes attended a dance at the Holiday Inn.
The opening ceremonies of Special Olympic Winter Games take place at the Superior Dome at 9 a.m. Athletes from five Upper Peninsula area Special Olympic groups will be participating this weekend at the games.
