EarthKeepers group returns
Ten different religious communities have come together for a U.P. energy conservation and garden initiative.
EarthKeepers brought faith traditions together from 2004 to 2009 on conservation and nature–related projects.
They’ve now come together again for the EarthKeepers II initiative.
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and NMU students are also involved.
NMU student Tom Merkel says besides getting other students interested, the project will involve energy audits at forty different U.P. churches or temples.
It also provides each site some funding to help pay for energy-related changes or repairs.
A grant from the Environmental Protection Agency made the revival possible.
The EPA grant is for nearly $195,000, and it will support the group for two years.
