Kelsey's Law Passes MI House

Tougher driving measures for teens are in the works in Michigan.

State Senate Bill 756, or Kelsey’s Law, passed a vote in the House of Representatives today 74-33.

It had already been approved in the Senate, and now it goes to Governor Rick Snyder’s desk.

Once he signs it, the measure will go into effect in April.

It would prevent drivers with a level one or two license from using cell phones in any way while driving, so for them, talking would be illegal.

Texting while behind the wheel is already illegal for all Michigan drivers.

The bill is named after Kelsey Raffaele, a teenager from Sault Ste. Marie.

She died in January 2010 from a car accident that she got into while talking on her cell phone.

Kelsey’s mother, Bonnie Raffaele, has been the driving force behind the measure, advocating tirelessly for its passage for more than a year.
