Marquette Shooting Update
The Marquette Police say they’ve arrested a Northern Michigan University student in connection with the shooting in the city Wednesday morning.
21-year-old Nicholas Ireland of downstate Grosse Pointe is charged with two misdemeanors: careless discharge of a firearm causing injury and firearm possession while under the influence.
The first charge carries a possible two-year sentence or a $2,000 fine, while the second has a possible 93-day sentence.
The charges come in the accidental shooting early Wednesday morning of 21-year-old NMU student Lauren Cockels of downstate West Bloomfield.
Police say Ireland was handling a .45-caliber handgun when it accidentally went off.
He had apparently taken the gun from someone else in the house at 518 Fisher Street as a safety measure.
Cockels was lying on a couch when a bullet struck her in the right knee.
Several male residents of the house came to her aid while Ireland called 911, and police found the handgun and the discharged round in the living room.
NMU Public Safety officers and Medi-Ride EMS assisted at the scene.
Ireland has been released on a personal recognizance bond.
He’s scheduled for arraignment in 96th District Court in Marquette this coming Monday, December 17th.
