Marquette Swears In Police Dogs
The Marquette Police Department swore in two new officers tonight, but they’re not the usual kind.
They’re both dogs.
Frodo and Scud are both thoroughly trained in tracking and narcotics interdiction.
They replace Nero, the city’s previous canine who retired earlier this year after seven years of service.
The dogs even had paw prints taken during tonight’s Marquette City Commission meeting.
Canine units don’t come cheap, but over a period of many months, the community was willing to help out with donations.
Chief Mike Angeli says it cost about $35,000 to purchase the dogs, train them and train their handlers.
He says the community was willing to donate a bit more than that, and the remainder will help support the dogs for the time being.
The City Commission and the Sister City delegation from Higashiomi, Japan also honored each other with gifts of friendship tonight.
The six delegates were even made honorary Marquette citizens.
They’re in the area until Wednesday.
