County Board Address Lake Water Levels at Sawyer
The Marquette County Board of Commissioners held a Committee of the Whole Meeting Tuesday night.
The commission chambers was filled with residents from both Martin and Sporley Lakes who have concerns about the water level of the lakes. The residents believe pumping of wells 9 and 10 at Sawyer is directly effecting the lake water levels.
Pumping has been reduced from wells 9 and 10 to just 10%, equal to 30,000 gallons per day. Wells 4 and 5 are being used for the main water supply.
Completely shutting down wells 9 and 10 is not permitted. Officials from the Department of Environmental Quality say it would violate Act 399, the safe drinking water act. The DEQ said their main concern is to not impact the quality of water for the customers being served near Sawyer. The board approved a motion at Tuesday night’s meeting to keep the pumping level at wells 9 and 10 at 10%. The board will revisit this issue in April.
