U.S. flags lowered for former State Rep.

LANSING, Mich. –Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags within the state Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff today through Saturday, Aug. 18 in honor of former state Rep. William “Bill” Jowett, of Grand Ledge, who died Monday. This is in accordance with Executive Order 10 from 2006, letter K. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Sunday, Aug. 19. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

“Rep. Jowett contributed so much to the communities of Port Huron and Grand Ledge and Michigan as a whole,” said Snyder. “My thoughts are with his wife, Jean, his children, entire family and many friends during this time.”

Jowett, formerly of Lansing and Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School in 1952, where he served as class president. Following graduation, he attended Port Huron Junior College for two years and served in the U.S. Army before graduating from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1957. In addition to his service as the former St. Clair County coroner, longtime Port Huron area funeral director and multi-client government consultant, Jowett served 14 years in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Visitation is set for 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Jowett Funeral Home in Port Huron, 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and again on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge. The funeral service will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
