UPSET officer receives award

LANSING. Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue
announced Monday that Detective Sergeant Ronald Koski Jr. was
recently named Michigan’s American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of
the Year.  Koski was nominated by the Rock American Legion for his
dedication to his country, his career and his community.

The American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award
recognizes a well-rounded Michigan Law Enforcement Officer who has
exceeded the duties and requirements expected of their position and who
exemplifies the virtues of professionalism and dedication, demonstrating
a distinct pattern of community service and personal dedication to
societal security and protection.

In Koski’s current position with the Upper Peninsula Substance
Enforcement Team (UPSET), he supervises MSP troopers, as well as local
police officers and deputies assigned to the team.  On a daily basis, he
is responsible for directing and approving all investigations and making
decisions during undercover operations that directly affect his
officers’ safety.  Koski also performs administrative duties, such as
case reviews, maintaining equipment and managing team training.

Koski has performed complex drug investigations resulting in the
confiscation of large quantities of illegal prescription and
nonprescription drugs, weapons and the apprehension of persons involved.
He has also shared his expertise with local officers and recruits by
teaching at the Northern Michigan University Regional Police Academy, as
well as giving educational presentations to community groups and
government entities.

Koski enlisted with the department in 1990, graduating as a member of
the 107th Trooper Recruit School.  In his 22-year career, Koski has
served in positions at the L’Anse, Negaunee and Gladstone posts, as
well as Second District Headquarters in Northville.

Prior to joining the MSP, Koski served in the Air Force for five years.
Outside of work, he has coached the Mid-Peninsula High School varsity
football team, as well as the junior high football team. He is president
of the Mid-Peninsula Sports Boosters Club and has been active with the
area Little League program for many years.

Koski resides in the Upper Peninsula with his wife, Amy, and three
sons.
