U.P. men reappointed to State Fire Safety Board
LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced appointments and re-appointments to the Michigan State Fire Safety Board. Among the re-appointments: men from Marquette and Delta Counties
In cooperation with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ Bureau of Fire Services and fire organizations throughout the state, this 17-member board assists with the development of fire safety rules for the construction, operation and maintenance of various public facilities.
“These individuals bring extensive training and years of valuable experience to the board,” said Snyder. “I am confident they will effectively work to protect Michigan citizens and property.”
Appointed:
Marcus “Mark” Jensen, of Millington, is owner of the Millington-based company, Jenco, and captain of the Millington Arbela Township Fire Department, where he has worked since 1978. He has held numerous positions within the department, including safety officer, training officer and administrative officer. Jensen is an active member of the Michigan Propane Gas Association and serves as an adviser for the association’s propane emergencies training and education program. He is a certified medical first responder, fire officer and Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council instructor. Jensen holds an associate degree in management from Great Lakes College and studied at the Michigan State Police Arson Investigation School. He will represent the liquefied petroleum or flammable compressed gas industry and replaces Robert Vandemark.
Andrew Lenaghan, of Dearborn, is the battalion fire chief for the Dearborn Fire Department, where he has worked since 1990. Previously, he served as a sergeant and fire protection specialist in the U.S. Air Force. Lenaghan is a licensed paramedic and certified fire officer I, II and III. He completed the fire science program with the Community College of the Air Force, earned an associate degree in fire science from Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn and attended the Eastern Michigan University School of Staff and Command. Lenaghan will represent fire departments in the Lower Peninsula and serve the remainder of a four-year term that expires July 15, 2015. He replaces Richard Miller, who was appointed state fire marshal.
Dr. Usamah Mossallam, of Bloomfield Hills, is the associate chief medical officer and senior attending physician in the emergency medicine department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He also serves as an assistant clinical professor at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine. Previously, Mossallam served as the chairman of the International Medical Center’s Department of Emergency Medicine and as a supervising physician for the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Arab American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society and Wayne County Medical Society. Mossallam holds a bachelor’s degree from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in New York and a medical degree from the State University of New York Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn. He will represent hospital administrators and replaces Timothy Tinney.
Ron Sabin, of Byron Center, is a lieutenant with the Grand Rapids Fire Department, where he has worked for 27 years. Previously, he served in the Air National Guard. Sabin received an associate degree in fire science from Lansing Community College and is a licensed building and fire inspector. He will represent fire departments in the Lower Peninsula and replaces Annette Swathwood.
Reappointed:
Donald Hicks, of Freeland, is a senior loss prevention engineer for the Dow Corning Corp. in Midland. He is responsible for implementing fire protection requirements for new and existing processes and providing guidance to Dow Corning sites regarding the safe handling and storage of flammable and combustible liquids. Hicks earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He will continue to represent the chemical manufacturing industry.
Thomas Lippens, of Rock, is the business manager and financial secretary for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 979 in Escanaba. He is a licensed master electrician and brings nearly 40 years of electrical experience to the board, on which he has served since 2009. Lippens is a member of the Economic Development Alliance of Delta County, Upper Peninsula Construction Council and the Community Action Agency Governing Board. He will continue to represent licensed electrical contractors of master electricians.
Dean Mallos, of Marquette, is a lieutenant with the City of Marquette Fire Department, where he has worked since 1991. He has held numerous positions within the department, including fire investigator, engineer, fire training instructor, emergency medical technician and firefighter. Mallos is a certified juvenile fire setter intervention specialist and Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council instructor. He earned a bachelor’s degree in conservation and law enforcement from Northern Michigan University and will continue to represent fire departments in the Upper Peninsula.
With the exception of Lenaghan, appointees will serve four-year terms that expire July 15, 2016. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
