Schoolcraft Co. Search and Rescue has busy Wednesday

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff Department responded to two separate search and rescue incidents Wednesday , both of which resulted in locating lost individuals.

At 11:10AM the Sheriff Department was dispatched to the West Shore of Indian Lake for the report of a lost 6 year old child. The juvenile who was visiting family at a residence in that area had reportedly walked away while playing in the front yard. Law enforcement searched the area and buildings around the residence immediately, then expanded the search to the woods near the scene. The child was located by a Manistique Public Safety Officer at 12:12PM in a wooded area approximately ¼ of a mile from the residence and returned to his family unharmed. Assisting in the search efforts were Manistique Public Safety Department, Sault Tribe Police Department, Michigan State Police, Inwood and Thompson Township Fire Departments and several volunteer neighbors.

At 7:50PM the Sheriff Department was dispatched to Michibay Road in Doyle Township for the report of an 88 year old male who walked away from his residence and had not returned for approximately 3 hours. Neighbors and friends started searching the area and the man was located by a retired deputy at 8:20PM and safely returned to his residence.

“I’m very pleased with how our departments work quickly and efficiently when these situations arise…It’s important to remember that time matters in these cases and the sooner you report the incident the better we can handle it. If something seems out of the ordinary don’t hesitate to call 911 and report it immediately,” said Sheriff Grant Harris. “We want people to know that we are here to take these types of calls anytime.”
