Hoekstra Visits U.P. on Senate Campaign

One of the Republican candidates for U.S. Senate is visiting the U.P. to get to know local voters and businesses better.
Former downstate Congressman Pete Hoekstra is vying for Debbie Stabenow’s seat in the Senate.
He visited the Kennecott Eagle mine site this morning, and he believes the mine is a positive for the regional economy.
Hoekstra says it would bring to the area more of the kinds of jobs that will prevent U.P. residents from having to leave the region for high-paying employment.
Hoekstra’s campaign paid nearly $150,000 for a TV commercial that ran during the Super Bowl four months ago.
It was criticized as racially insensitive and was quickly pulled.
Hoekstra claims criticisms of the ad are off base, saying the ad was about jobs leaving the U.S. for Asian countries.
He also says critics of the commercial do so because they’re trying to deflect attention from what has gone on in Washington in the last three and a half years.
Hoekstra was in Escanaba last night and will be there again tonight.
This afternoon, he visited Marquette General to learn more about the pending sale that would change it from non–profit to for–profit status.
