Ishpeming Murder Suspect Arraigned

The shooting suspect in a Friday death has been identified and has entered a plea.
52-year-old Jacques Carpenter of Ishpeming is charged with murder in the shooting that took place at 409 North Second Street Friday afternoon.
Ishpeming Police say Carpenter was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
He’s being held without bond at the Marquette County Jail.
Carpenter entered a not guilty plea in 96th District Court in Marquette County to the charges.
He faces a life sentence if convicted of open murder and a weapons charge in the death of 29-year-old David Meyer, Jr.
Carpenter is also charged with a 15-year felony of unlawful imprisonment and felonious assault.
Those charges stem from Carpenter allegedly preventing an eyewitness from leaving after the shooting and from allegedly threatening the witness with the firearm if he went to the police.
Ishpeming Police Chief Dan Willey says his office was contacted by an eyewitness to the shooting shortly before 1 pm Friday.
The eyewitness went to the police station to report the incident.
He was unsure of the address and had to lead officers to the scene.
Ishpeming Police, along with an officer from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and a Michigan State Police trooper, went to the scene.
They found a deceased man in the house who appeared to have been shot.
The man was identified as Meyer, who had recently been staying at the residence and was renting a room.
Police say they believe the victim and the suspect argued before the shooting.
The Ishpeming Police are continuing to investigate this incident, with assistance from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police Crime Lab, Ishpeming Township Police and the Negaunee Police Department.
Results of an autopsy on the victim have not yet been released. Carpenter is scheduled for a preliminary exam on June 21st.
