Benishek thanks Duck Lake Fire Crews
WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today released the following statement regarding the continued efforts to stop the Duck Lake Wildfire in Luce County:
“The tireless efforts of the many firefighters, including volunteers, personnel from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), members of the American Red Cross, and National Guard members in Luce County over the past six days is illustrative of the bravery and selflessness found in Northern Michigan. Since the fire began, these crews have been functioning around the clock. I know the entire community is grateful for all the hard work they’ve been doing to combat the blaze.
The loss of property, homes and businesses in the Duck Lake Fire is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have watched parts of their lives burn to the ground. The outpouring of support from the community for those affected has been moving. The evacuees remain in need of basic necessities—from clothes to toiletries. Those interested in helping can contact the American Red Cross emergency shelter in Newberry at 906-293-3729.
Over the weekend, I had the privilege of visiting the DNR’s Duck Lake Fire Command Center in Newberry. While there, DNR officials briefed me on the multi-state, multi-agency collaborative efforts to control this wildfire. It was awe-inspiring to witness so many individuals diligently working on such an important cause. My office will continue work with local, state, and federal agencies to be as helpful as possible to those who have been displaced by this fire.”
