No injuries in Manistique apartment fire
Two observant police officers are being credited with the quick response to a structure fire late Friday night.
Manistique Public Safety Sergeant Charles Willour and Officer Vern Faulds discovered a structure fire during routine patrol at 11:48 pm.
The fire was in an upstairs apartment located at 537 Michigan Avenue in the City of Manistique.
Officers immediately issued a full department call out of Manistique Public Safety Officers and Manistique Volunteer firefighters.
Firefighters contained the fire to the upstairs apartment. The residents, George Lavance and Leslie Lash, were not home at the time of the fire. The apartment received heavy fire damage.
A second downstairs vacant apartment received heavy water and smoke damage.
The home is owned by Jeremy Mortensen.
There were no injuries reported to firefighters or civilians.
Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police and and the Schoolcraft County Chapter of the American Red Cross, which is also assisting Lavance
and Lash.
The fire remains under investigation by Manistique Public Safety.
