Huuki To Hold Vets Symposium
State Rep. Matt Huuki will hold a veterans’ symposium in the Western U.P. Thursday.
Huuki says he wants to provide veterans a forum to address state officials directly about their concerns. He says this is an idea that arose from his February town hall tour where he spoke with L’Anse resident and Korean War veteran Donald Baril.
“We need to do what we can to bridge the gap between state government in Lansing and U.P. veterans,” said Huuki, R-Atlantic Mine. “It’s important that we work together to determine what Michigan can do for them, and help them to get the services they need.”
Today, Huuki secured the attendance of two state officials with a great deal of influence and experience: State Rep. Ray Franz, chair of the House Military and Veterans Committee and Jason Allen, Senior Deputy Director for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
“I’m grateful that Rep. Franz and Jason Allen will take time out of their own schedules to talk to local veterans,” said Huuki, R-Atlantic Mine. “We all share the same concerns; getting veterans the benefits they are due and hearing their suggestions on how we can better serve them as a state.”
Huuki will be meeting with veterans April 27 from 10 a.m. to noon. Eastern Standard Time at the Baraga Readiness Center, located at 1005 N Superior Ave. in Baraga, and from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time at VFW Post 3673, located at 605 W. Lead St. in Bessemer.
Huuki and Rep. Ed McBroom will meet with veterans in Iron River on April 28, from 10 a.m. to noon Central Standard Time. The Iron River event will be held at the Iron River Readiness Center on 9 West Franklin St.
Huuki will be bringing key legislators and state officials to these locations to hear from local veterans and their families.
