MARQUETTE COUNTY — One of the state’s biggest mountain bike races has officially been canceled for this year

The 2020 Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic will no longer go on as planned. This would have been the 21st year for the popular annual event.

Race Director Scott Tuma says this difficult decision was reached after watching Governor Whitmer’s decisions concerning the pandemic, taking CDC recommendations into consideration, and working with local health officials and law enforcement.

“We had to take a wait and watch approach, because if we would have waited until the last minute to plan and it was okay to go, we wouldn’t have been able to do it,” Tuma explained. “So we looked at the volunteers, they’re involved and they’re around the racers, and the community’s safety and everyone involved with the race. It was at this point the right thing to, do with all the recommendations and how things are going with COVID. It was a hard decision to call it off, but we knew we had to and we hope people will come back next year and partake in the race.”

Racers who preregistered for the 2020 Ore to Shore will have their entries honored at next summer’s event.

In the meantime, the Race Committee will be working to clear the trails of fallen trees from the winter season.
