MARQUETTE — A new program at Northern Michigan University is getting some much needed help from a new organization in Marquette.

Meijer donated two reconditioned semi trucks Friday to NMU’s new CDL Truck Driving Program. The trucks were given new tires and designs. The partnership between Meijer and the City of Marquette has been ongoing for a while.

“Communities support universities that support communities,” said NMU President Fritz Erickson. “Having a corporation like the Meijer Corporation come in and develop these kinds of partnerships is really important to the education of our students.”

“Our partnership with Marquette and the university started months ago. It’s the right thing to do and I love doing it,” said store director John Spaulding.

The donations came just in time. The first cohort is scheduled to begin classes this summer.

When the store opens in late may, Meijer will look to reach out and continue their involvement with the community.
