Bay College announces nickname
ESCANABA — With athletics coming to campus, Bay College announced a nickname and logo on a grand stage.
That grand stage – the Michigan State Fair in Escanaba. Where the logo and name – the ‘Norse’ – was unveiled. For the first time since 1978, Bay College is getting four athletic teams. Including basketball for both men and women, as well as cross country, also for men and women.
Both beginning in the fall of 2017.
“So we did a survey with the entire community, outside of the college as well as college staff and administration, “explained Escanaba College President, Laura Coleman, “And ‘Norsemen’ was the name of the team back in the 70s. They disbanded them (back then) and history really won out, and it was the most popular name that came out within the survey. So we decided to go with that. We wanted to make it gender neutral, and so we went to just ‘Norse’.”
The name is gender neutral. And – in case you’re wondering what a ‘Norse’ is, President Coleman explained it’s the name of a Viking group. Bay College partnered with Sign-UP of Escanaba for the development of the new logo.
