Eggleston named head coach of Cougars football team
EBEN JUNCTION — A new hire can usually spark a team to do better things in the future, and that’s what Superior Central is hoping to do with an in–house hire at the top of their football program.
Sam Eggleston has been named the new head coach of the Cougars football team. He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant under the now–departed Brenton Fitzpatrick. Eggleston says he is very excited for the opportunity, but he knows there is a lot of work to do.
“The first thing for me on the to–do list is definitely just get the kids aware that there’s going to be a change, that we are going to be making some adjustments on our offense and defense. And just getting everybody to rally around the idea that this is a new season and a new year with new opportunities,” said Eggleston.
Superior Central’s 8–man football program has been around since 2010 and experienced some decent success in its first four years. But they have won just four games in the past two seasons, and in a conference that features Rapid River, Forest Park and state champions North Central, they’ll need to step up their game to be up there with the best.
“Right now, we want to get to the point where we are competitive in every game. We want people to leave saying “You know what? That was close. Had a couple things changed, they would’ve won this contest”. And in order to get there, we just got to buy in. We’ve got to work as a team. No more individual thought processes and a lot more team focus,” said Eggleston.
The first team practices will begin on August 8th.
