Students compete in CTE Challenge
MARQUETTE — Students from all over the Upper Peninsula gathered at Northern Michigan University to show off their career and technical education skills.
At the 10th Annual Upper Peninsula High School Construction Skills Challenge, students showcased their construction, welding, and automotive abilities.
Marquette–Alger RESA’s CTE Director Brian Sarvello described this event as the equivalent of the U.P. or State Finals in athletics. The CTE Skills Challenge is a special day for these students, but also helps them prepare for their futures.
“I want these students to know that there are jobs available out there,” said UPCC Executive Director Tony Retaskie, “there’s opportunities to grow in any career that’s related to the construction industry right now. It also gives them a preview of Northern Michigan University and apprenticeship programs. This is a great opportunity for us to learn from our students. We also give them an opportunity to compete and represent their schools.”
In addition to the challenges, professional development sessions focusing on safety and career preparation were given by CTE teachers.
At the end of the day for construction Munising took third place, Westwood took second, and Dickinson Iron ISD took first and the traveling trophy.
