U.P. city getting $7 million facelift
HANCOCK — The City of Hancock is getting a facelift. ABC 10’s Amanda L’Esperance gives us the details on this 7 million dollar construction project.
Construction will soon start on the Hancock streetscape project. The 7.1 million dollar project will be done in phases starting early May with estimated completion in June 2017.
This year’s phases include the nearly mile–long stretch of US–41 called Quincy Street. Work includes replacing the current roadway, adding safety improvements for pedestrians, and creating a more decorative downtown feel.
As with all construction projects, there will be delays and detours. However, downtown businesses will remain accessible for the duration of the project.
Manager of MDOT Ishpeming Transportation Service Center, Aaron Johnson said, “Keep in mind it’s going to be a busy place, very congested in our detour route. But we ask for your patience and we ask for your support of the business in downtown Hancock. Don’t forget about them, they’re open for business. And we look forward to the end in sight, which is going to be a really remarkable downtown Hancock.”
The Quincy Street improvements are expected to be finished this year when residents and visitors will see decorative lighting, landscaping, bike racks and benches.
City Liaison, Deborah Mann said, “In the long run it is a short–term pain for a long–term gain. We’re all looking forward to the improvements. We’re going to try to make it a very pleasant process if we can and keeping an eye on that long–term goal.”
MDOT is determined to keep residents and visitors updated during the duration of the project. Their website will have updates under the project tab and you can sign up for email updates.
