Student nurses run for local shelter
MARQUETTE — A student organization is hosting a race this weekend to benefit a shelter for low–income families.
The Student Nurses Association at Northern Michigan University is holding their third annual Run for Shelter 5K. This year the event will benefit Janzen House a non–profit shelter for low–income and potentially homeless people and families in the Marquette area.
NMU Student Nurses Association Secretary Celeste Gasiewicz says, “Every year we try to pick something that follows the theme of “Run for Shelter,” so a shelter of some sort, and we heard that the Janzen House was looking to do a lot of renovations this year, so we thought it would be a perfect fit.”
The organization’s secretary and treasurer both agree that they want to give back to the community as a thank you for the support their organization receives.
NMU Student Nurses Association Treasurer Tess Sarafiny says, “Well as student nurses we are compassionate and we want to do everything to help anyone, especially the less privileged and anyone who could really benefit in the community, we just want to help out.”
Registration for the event begin at 7:30 Saturday morning in the Peter White Lounge at the University Center at NMU.
The cost is $20 for individuals and $25 for families. Participants can also purchase event t-shirts for $5.
