Olympiad science competition training for coaches is underway
MARQUETE — Olympic type training took place today at NMU and it didn’t involve ring tosses, track meets or downhill skiing.
But Olympic-sized meeting of the minds, geared up for competition. U.P. Science coaches’ were in training for the upcoming Science Olympiad Regional Science Competition. High school and middle school teachers say its a worthwhile event that never gets old.
Bessemer H.S. Teacher David Rowe says, “Every year there are some new problems or there is a spin on problems that have been there before and you can get some ideas on how to train. You can also do networking with other coaches that is very helpful, we are very good about helping each other. I love when the kids learn something and this light bulb comes on and they get all excited about learning science.”
“It’s kind of electrifying, the kids have worked for so long to prepare and get ready for 1, 2, 3 events and this is where they get to show their stuff.” said Science Teacher Darrell Hendrickson, Washington Middle & High School.
Science Olympiad is a team competition that focuses on science education. It is designed to increase student interest and test scores as well as strengthen their problem–solving and team work skills.
“I think the Science Olympiad program is very important, especially with the new Next Generation science standards. Students are able to do hands on activities in science and get that experience and see if they want to go on to a career in Stem someday,” said
Teachers say they come for the training because the sharing of resources is vital. The Regional competition will be held at NMU in February.
