Three apprehended in eastern U.P. heroin bust

SAULT STE. MARIE — Three people are behind bars after a heroin bust in the eastern U.P.

20-year-old Randall Parks of Key West, Florida, 19-year-old Summer Chumani Desport of Cudjoe Key, Florida, and Collin Fawcett of Sault Ste. Marie were taken into custody by the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task force after the conclusion of an investigation into the sale of heroin on Friday.

Tri-DENT detectives say they received information about the Florida couple who had allegedly brought heroin to the Sault Ste. Marie area and were actively selling it. Detectives located the couple and were able to identify the Sault Ste. Marie man they were working with. Detectives conducted surveillance at the residence they were staying at and also made heroin purchases from the suspects.

On Friday, after a heroin purchase, police say the couple was seen walking away from the residence. Detectives had uniformed officers stop the couple for further investigation, but the two fled in different directions from the officers. Both suspects allegedly tossed heroin packets while attempting to escape. The packets were recovered and the suspects were ultimately apprehended. Police say a Tri-DENT detective received a large laceration to his hand during the chase, and was treated and released at War Memorial Hospital.

A search warrant executed on the residence found narcotics packaging, digital scales, a loaded assault-style rifle, and additional evidence.

Parks was arrested on two counts of delivery of heroin, one count of possession with intent to deliver heroin, and one count of resisting and obstructing causing injury. Desport was arrested on one count of possession with intent to deliver herion, one count of conspiracy to deliver heroin, and one count of resisting and obstructing. Fawcett was taken in on two counts of delivery of heroin. All three were booked into the Chippewa County Correctional Facility.
