Biggest outdoor Spring challenge this weekend
MARQUETTE — One of Marquette’s biggest outdoor spring challenge is set to take place this weekend, the event put on by the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center is a collaboration between Northern Michigan University and UP Health System Marquette.
The ‘Hope Starts Here” half marathon, five and ten K race, du-athalon and leisure walk, is celebrating a decade of success. The Upper Peninsula Brain Tumor Center located at NMU was started ten years ago by Robert Winn and neurosurgeon Rich Robin from Marquette Hospital. A decade later, progress and continued excitement.
“There are many things I am excited about in brain tumor research, we certainly understand now that the cells in the tumor that cause the tumor to recur or to come back, we are figuring out ways to target those cells so that is pretty exciting but for me the biggest excitement is to see the growth of our students,” said Robert Winn, Founder, Brain Tumor Center.
Set up for the race began today, and the starting point will be LakeView Arena. Participants are currently picking up their T-shirts and registration packets. If you are interested in participating, you can register at LakeView until seven pm tonight. Registration fees go to support the brain tumor research center as they are looking forward to what they can accomplish in the next ten years.
“I would really like to see that we have cured brain cancer but if we haven’t cured the disease, I would like to see that we have impacted patient prognosis. Right now a patient who gets diagnosed with a brain tumor, particularly the most common, which is the most aggressive, survival is usually 10 – 15 months and I want that to be once you are diagnosed, 10–15 years,” continued Winn
Registration for the ‘Hope Starts Here” challenge starts at 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
The half marathon begins at 8:00 a.m.
The Duathalon begins at 9:00 a.m.
The 5 and 10k run starts at 10:00 a.m.
The leisure family walk/ride begins at 10:30am with a lunch to follow.
