Wildcats fall in OT to Falcons
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — No. 13 Bowling Green scored with 28-seconds remaining in the first overtime period to take game one of a best of three Western Collegiate Hockey Association opening round playoff series, 3-2, over the Northern Michigan University hockey team Friday.
The Wildcats (14-17-6) and Falcons (22-10-5) will play game two of the series at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
NMU sophomore Shane Sooth put the Wildcats on the board on assists from sophomore Dominik Shine and senior Reed Seckel at the 7:17 mark of the second period. It was the seventh goal of the season for Sooth.
The Wildcats carried their 1-0 lead until midway through the third period when Bowling Green’s Mitchell McLain scored at 10:48 of the frame on assists from Matt Pohlkamp and Connor Kucera.
NMU recaptured the lead with jet 3:31 left in the third period when senior defenseman Luke Eibler scored his second goal of the season on an assist from Sooth.
The Falcons knotted the game at 2-2 with 1:24 left in regulation when Mark Cooper scored an unassisted tally.
Tyler Spezia scored the final goal of the game, unassisted with 28-seconds left int eh first overtime period.
NMU was outshot 52-40 by the Falcons. Junior goalie Michael Doan (4-10-2) made 49 saves in net for the Wildcats including saving 11 of 12 shots in the overtime period. Tommy Burke (13-5-3) made 38 saves in net for BG.
NMU was 0-3 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.
