MUNISING — ALTRAN was assessing the damage Thursday morning after a late–night fire at their building in Munising.

The group does not yet know which of the vehicles damaged in the fire will be usable. Accordingly, ALTRAN services are shut down at least for Thursday. They hope to get up and running as soon as possible.

ALTRAN will be looking to borrow vehicles from other agencies to help them get back in service. Work and medical rides will be their likely priorities.

Munising Mayor Rod DesJardins and ALTRAN Administrative Assistant Kim Monette were among those at the scene Thursday morning. While DesJardins mentioned that the building looks like it may be a total loss, both praised firefighters for salvaging many items, including their database server and numerous files.

Firefighters were called out around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and were on the scene until 7:30 in the morning. Munising Fire Chief Dan Malone said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. From a preliminary assessment, it appears that the fire started in the bus garage area. Malone said the building’s flat rubber composite roof was challenging to extinguish.

There were no injuries.
