February 24th, Pasty Central Day in History
On this day in 1863, in the middle of the civil war, Governor Austin Blair spoke for the entire state of Michigan. In a joint resolution supporting the Emancipation Proclamation and calling for the unconditional submission of the southern rebel states.
Also on this day in 1863, Arizona was organized as a US Territory. In less then half a century, Arizona would surpass the Upper Peninsula in production of Copper.
On this day in 1959, one of the largest pieces of structural steel arrived in the Copper Country from a plant in Gary, Indiana. It was the approach span girders for the Portage Lake lift bridge as construction staging got under way on this day in 1959. Pasty Central Day in History, February 24th.
