Excessive speed likely factor in fatal snowmobile accident
AU TRAIN TOWNSHIP – A snowmobile driver is dead after his vehicle left an Alger County trail and struck a tree.
Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Alger County Sheriff’s Department says 45–year–old Donald Stagner, of New Lenox, Illinois, was traveling on Trail #7 in Au Train Township when the crash occurred. He was unable to negotiate a corner, at which point his machine left the trail and hit a tree.
Lenox was dead upon troopers’ arrival on scene. While the accident remains under investigation, it is believed that excessive speed was the main factor in the accident.
