Sweeney named WCHA D-Man of the Week
EDINA, Minn. – Michigan Tech defenseman Riley Sweeney was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 9). The senior had a pair of goals and was named Winter Carnival MVP in Tech’s WCHA series sweep of Bemidji State.
Sweeney, a native of Delta, B.C., scored the game’s first goal each night for his first two of the season. He scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway 9:21 into the game Friday. With 1:40 left in Saturday’s first period, Sweeney stepped into a long wrist shot from inside the blue line that found the back of the net. He has two goals and five assists this season. Sweeney, whose 146 career games played lead the team, also keyed a Huskies’ defense that allowed just two goals in a pair of tightly-contested victories.
No. 5 Michigan Tech takes its 22-7-1 record, and six-game winning streak, up to Alaska for a WCHA series with the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. The puck drops at 11:07 p.m. each night at Sullivan Arena.
