January 30th Pasty Central Day in History
Iron from Upper Michigan played an important role in 19th century advances in industry and technology. The first shipments of iron ore began in 1852, and less than 10 years later, on this day in 1862 The first American ironclad warship, the USS Monitor was launched.
The warship as well as iron and men from Upper Michigan would play an important role in America’s civil war. Also on this day in 1892, the Marquette Mining Journal reported that the iron-mining town of Republic was now connected with the fastest trains to Lake Michigan and on to Detroit. Finally, on this day in 1933, Detroit radio station WXYZ aired the first broadcast of The Lone Ranger Pasty Central Day in History January 30th.
