DNR & Keweenaw Land Trust receive grant to preserve Baraga County wetlands

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Michigan DNR and the Keweenaw Land Trust have received a million dollars to preserve wetlands in Baraga County. The grant money comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The DNR and the Keweenaw Land Trust will use the money to buy and protect four privately-owned parcels of coastal wetland and near-shore aquatic habitat. The land is on the Abbaye Peninsula and on Huron Bay.

The four parcels total nearly 1,400 acres and they include nearly a mile of Lake Superior shoreline. The area serves as a habitat for waterfowl, black bears and bobcats.
