Peter White Public Library offers more than just books
MARQUETTE — The colder weather might have people thinking about going into hibernation mode for the rest of the winter. If you’re looking for a chance to get out of the house, the Peter White Public Library may be the perfect place to go.
Not only does the library have thousands of books, but there are exhibits featuring Upper Peninsula history. Its latest exhibit is one featuring different types of snowshoes owned by Gwinn resident Jerry Mohlman.
“He said, ‘well, I have some antique snowshoes; would you like to have those here?’. And I said, ‘that would be perfect’, because it’s winter and people are snowshoeing already,” Peter White Public Library programming coordinator Margaret Boyle said. “It’s a little slice of life here in the U.P. to kind of remember how not everyone has aluminum or plastic snowshoes. The modern ones are so very different from these handmade ones.”
The library also has activities daily, including story time for kids and movie screenings. Boyle said the library has become a community center to expand learning.
“The library’s all about lifelong learning for all ages, so part of that is to see exhibits and see artifacts or see art and see different people interpretations of it,” she said. “It’s not just entertainment reading, a lot of people want to keep learning their whole lives long. That information is not always in books. There’s many ways to pass on that information, and the library is the perfect center to host that information.”
