Three-point shooting carries Tech vs. MSU
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Kelli Guy buried seven 3-pointers to help Michigan Tech overcome a 25-20 halftime deficit and win 70-61 over Minnesota State today at the SDC Gym. The Huskies put up 50 points in the second half with 19 coming from Guy to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Guy more than doubled her previous career high with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting including 7-of-9 accuracy from behind the arc.
Brenna Heise scored Tech’s first eight points, but it was the Mavericks (3-2) creating a 22-10 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the first half. The Huskies defense tightened, and MSU did not score for the final five minutes of the half. Tech was able to rally back within 25-20 at the break.
The margin grew back to as many as 12 in the second half before back-to-back 3-pointers from Morgan Anderson and Guy cut the margin to six with 15:00 to go. A Heise three-point play made it a 38-35 score a minute later.
Guy eventually gave Tech the lead at the 10:57 mark on a pull-up jumper. After a quick Mavericks score, Guy buried her fourth triple of the game to put the home team on top for good.
Minnesota State stayed within three (59-56) with three minutes to play, but a pair of free throws from Danielle Blake, a Mavericks turnover and Guy’s seventh trey of the game pushed the margin to eight with under two to play.
“Defense kept us in the first half. To hold them scoreless for the last five minutes allowed us to make a 7-0 run. That gave us some momentum going into the second half,” said Tech coach Kim Cameron. “Kelli then sparked us with her shooting. If she’s hot, she’s tough to stop.”
Tech shot just 26 percent in the opening half, but made 56 percent in the second to finish at just under 40 for the game. MSU shot just under 30 percent in the first half and 36 percent for the contest.
Heise was the only Husky to join Guy in double figures. She had 15 to go with six rebounds and three steals. Blake notched eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals.
Thanks to Guy’s 25, Tech’s bench outscored Minnesota State’s 27-17.
Michigan Tech, which improved to 57-6 (90.5 percent) at the SDC Gym under Coach Cameron, will head on the road and open conference play next week. The Huskies face Malone on Thursday (Dec. 4) and Walsh on Saturday (Dec. 6) in a pair of GLIAC games.
