For this week’s episode of ABC 10 ‘In Focus’ U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Miles, Jr. stopped by the studio for an interview. Miles is the U.S. Attorney for the U.P. and was nominated by President Obama in 2012. Miles is the first person of color to hold the position of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan. Patrick Miles, Jr. was nominated by President Barack Obama on March 29, 2012 to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 29, 2012 and assumed office on July 9, 2012.
Mr. Miles is a Grand Rapids native and attended Grand Rapids Public Schools. He holds a bachelors of science degree in business administration with an economics major from Aquinas College. Mr. Miles is a 1991 Harvard Law School graduate. He was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Record. Following law school, Mr. Miles joined Varnum LLP, a 150-attorney law firm based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1997, at the age of 29, Mr. Miles became the first African-American partner in Varnum’s 110-year history. In 2006, Mr. Miles became a member of Dickinson Wright PLLC, a law firm with 260 attorneys and offices in Ann Arbor, Bloomfield Hills, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Nashville, Phoenix, Washington, DC and Toronto.
Mr. Miles was elected to serve as President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association from 2004 to 2005 and as a trustee from 1999 to 2002. He has also served over two dozen charitable and professional boards and committees.
Listed as one of Michigan’s “Super Lawyers” since 2006, Mr. Miles is a highly regarded attorney and board member. He holds the highest rating, AV, from Martindale Hubbell peer review which rates attorney reputation, ethics, legal ability, and knowledge. Mr. Miles received the 1996 State Bar of Michigan Outstanding Young Lawyer Award, the 2005 Outstanding Young Michigander Award from the Michigan Jaycees, and a number of awards and honors from several other organizations such as the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, West Michigan United Way, NAACP, Grand Rapids Jaycees, and Grand Rapids Business Journal.
Mr. Miles is a frequent author and speaker to professional audiences on legal issues, professionalism, diversity and inclusion as well as to youth audiences on leadership and service.
