MTU’s Phillips honored by the WCHA
EDINA, Minn. – Michigan Tech junior goaltender Jamie Phillips was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Oct. 27). He led the Huskies to a WCHA series sweep at then-No. 8 Ferris State over the weekend, stopping 67-of-68 shots.
Phillips, a native of Caledonia, Ont., recorded his second career shutout in a 1-0 win on Friday, making 33 saves. Saturday, the Winnipeg Jets draft pick had 34 saves in a 2-1 win.
One of six undefeated goalies in the country, Phillips ranks sixth nationally with a 1.25 goals against average and .954 save percentage.
The No. 17-ranked Huskies host No. 15 Michigan at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena at 7:07 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in the home opening series. The Wolverines are making their first appearance in Houghton since 1983 and are 2-3-0 on the season.
Tech will also be hosting the Stanley Cup Friday. Fans with a ticket to either Friday or Saturday’s game will be able to view the trophy along with the Hart Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, MacNaughton Cup and Gibson Cup.
