Girl killed on Drummond Island after rifle discharges in vehicle
DRUMMOND ISLAND — A 12-year-old girl is dead after a rifle discharged, fatally shooting her during a youth hunting event on Drummond Island.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened late Sunday morning. They say two children and two adults were driving on Glen Cove Road when a hunting rifle discharged and shot the girl, who was sitting in the back seat.
The incident remains under investigation, and no names are being released at this time.
The Michigan DNR, Drummond Island EMS, and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
Deputies also responded to a second shooting incident near Pickford over the weekend. A woman shot herself in the foot with a shotgun during a goose hunt. The shot caused an impairment type injury.
