Police arrest Bessemer standoff suspect without incident
BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a 38-year-old Bessemer man after a standoff at a residence in the City of Bessemer.
Deputies say they received reports of gunshots in the vicinity of the suspect’s residence at 10:40 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The responding officers secured the perimeter and waited for backup.
The suspect was visible both in and outside the residence throughout the incident but did not reciprocate attempts to contact him. Neighboring residences were evacuated as a precaution and the Gogebic/Iron Area SWAT Team was also called in.
After unsuccessfully trying to make contact with the suspect throughout the night, officers entered the residence around 5:10 a.m. central time Wednesday and took the suspect into custody without incident.
The suspect is currently lodged in the Gogebic County Jail awaiting arraignment.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Corrections Emergency Response Team, Hurley and Iron County, WI law enforcement, Beacon Ambulance and the City of Bessemer DPW.
