Troopers raise awareness for Special Olympics with Torch Run
For 30 years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has been raising money and awareness for the Special Olympics.
Today, the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post hosted the run featuring several athletes who either ran, walked or rode a bike. Although it’s been around for three decades, the run hasn’t always been held in Iron Mountain.
“This is the second year that I’ve been a part of it,” Community Service Trooper Geno Basanese said. “There have been a few years that we haven’t had it here, so some officers and I got together and we wanted to get it going again. Last year was our first year and we had a great success, and we want to make it even bigger and better this year.”
Area law enforcement agencies collaborated by driving alongside the athletes to keep traffic at a distance. Troopers are appreciative of those who came out in support of Special Olympics.
“We just like to really appreciate everyone that’s coming out today and running, walking or riding their bike with us. It’s all about awareness and raising money,” Trooper Basanese said.
Athletes ran, walked and rode two miles down US-2 from the Iron Mountain Post to the Iron Mountain Police Department.
